Past ARLIS/NE Programs - Notes:
Internet Meeting
Friday, Dec. 8, 1995
University of Mass., Dartmouth
The third meeting in 1995 of ARLIS/NE was an opportunity to explore the opportunities and challenges
presented by the rapidly-evolving number of resources available through the Internet. This all-day
session, hosted by Linda Zieper at The University of Massachusetts in Dartmouth, offered a choice of
two workshops in the morning: Overview of the Internet, and How to Create a HomePage on the World Wide
Web. In the afternoon the entire group met together to explore the WWW in a classroom with 17
computer workstations for hands-on experience. The meeting was limited to 35, with preference given
to ARLIS/NE members, so that everyone would have a chance to get experience on a computer.
After the morning's welcoming coffee in the first floor library browsing area, the business meeting
and orientation for the day took place. The results from the recent annual election were announced:
Ann Whiteside, Vice-Chair/ Chair-Elect, and Caron Carnahan, Treasurer. Members were reminded that it
is time for membership renewals and members were encouraged to consider applying for the Wolfgang
Freitag Professional Development Award.
Registrants then assembled for their respective morning sessions:
A. Overview of the Intemet. Learn about e-mail, listserves, gopher and telnet, with instructors Amanda Bowen and Linda Zieper
and
B. How to Create a HomePage on the WorldWide Web--Learn about HTML with instructor Hugh Wilbum.
The University Gallery was open for those who preferred an exploration of art to computer science.
A tasty lunch was accompanied by an engaging slide/talk by Lasse Antonsen, University Gallery Director,
who chronicled the design of the Univ. of Mass., Dartmouth campus by architect Paul Rudolph.
Directly following lunch the group assembled for the afternoon session. Several talks by ARLIS/NE
members covered a range of Internet topics: The World Wide Web: Introduction to the WWW & Netscape
(Adeane Bregman); Starting Points: the Wellesley HomePage (Richard McElroy); Art on the Internet
(Pat Flanagan); Architecture on the Internet (Ann Whiteside); and Image Databases on the Internet
(Katherine Poole). Registrants came away from the meeting with handouts summarizing the topics
covered and with the addresses of many useful sites found on the Internet.
